Who are the London Rollergirls?

Hot on the heels of a hugely successful resurgence in the United States, the London Rollergirls were the first league to bring the new revival of women’s flat-track roller derby to the UK.
Since our first practice in April of 2006 we have worked hard to grow and overcome the obstacles involved in bringing a new grass roots, DIY sport to a city largely unfamiliar with it. We are, however, changing that quickly! Through word of mouth, publicity fund-raiser events and promotion we are successfully introducing the capital to this unique, full-contact roller sport.
The women that make up the league are not easily defined as there is no prototype for a Rollergirl. You do not need to be tattooed or punk, you do not need to be a sports fanatic but both girls fit in fine and both have a home within the London Rollergirls league. We are comprised of a diverse collection of women of various interests and lifestyles. We take the athletics and sport very seriously but incorporate deviously fun alias skate names and personas, with creative team themes and uniforms reflecting our own individual styles.
Ownership and responsibility is shared by all who are involved. It is encouraged that everyone help with fundraising, promotion, recruiting, merchandising and other duties that build and drive the league, members who are involved in committees value the sense of ownership and accomplishment they get, however your level of involvement is up to you. Feeling left out guys? Well you're not, though it the league allows female players only we open membership to men to help fill the roles of coaches, referees, announcers and more. Our guys are just as much a part of the community and growing process.
The London Rollergirls is like nothing you've ever seen, we take pride in being a positive character building experience for women, whilst not excluding men but working along side them in equal respect. We endeavour to empower all women by promoting athleticism, good sportsmanship, teamwork and independence, and positive self-image. Our vision is to promote and grow the sport of rollerderby and build a competitive sporting organisation whilst giving back to the community through charitable work. We strive for a diverse league that is truly representative of the Greater London community and welcome people from all backgrounds to participate regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or nationality.
